LSI stands for the Langelier Saturation Index. It is a calculated value used to evaluate whether water is more likely to deposit calcium scale, remain balanced, or become aggressive toward cementitious surfaces and equipment.
Instead of judging one reading by itself, LSI considers the combined effect of pH, total alkalinity, calcium hardness, water temperature, cyanuric acid, and dissolved solids.

When the index is too high, calcium is more likely to leave the water and form deposits on tile, finishes, heaters, salt cells, and plumbing.
Balanced water is less likely to deposit calcium or aggressively dissolve material from cementitious surfaces.
When the index is too low, the water may pull calcium and other material from plaster, grout, quartz, pebble, or other surfaces.
Temperature, evaporation, rainfall, refill water, and chemical additions can shift LSI even when the pool still looks clear.
Each condition affects the overall result differently. A change in one area may require a different correction than simply chasing pH alone.

Higher calcium can increase scale pressure even when pH appears acceptable.
Warm pools, spas, and heaters can become more scale-forming than cooler water.
Alkalinity influences buffering and the overall saturation balance.
Cyanuric acid affects the alkalinity contribution used in water-balance calculations.
Dissolved solids can shift the final index and change how the water behaves.
Refill water can continuously add calcium, alkalinity, metals, and dissolved solids.

When water remains scale-forming, calcium may deposit on waterline tile, spillways, salt cells, heaters, plumbing, fittings, and the pool finish.
Water that remains too aggressive may contribute to etching, roughness, discoloration, grout deterioration, and metal corrosion.

Florida water temperatures can increase scale pressure even when other readings remain unchanged.
Hot spa water may require different balance considerations than the cooler pool body.
Inside a heater, water temperature rises sharply and may encourage scale on internal surfaces.
A pool that is balanced in winter may need different chemistry targets during the hottest months.
New plaster, quartz, pebble, and polished aggregate finishes continue curing after the pool is filled. During this period, pH, calcium, alkalinity, brushing, circulation, and filtration require close attention.
